What We Need to Know About Fire Hoses

Fire hoses are among the most important components of firefighting equipment. They ensure the fast and efficient transport of water or foam agents to the fire scene, making them crucial for limiting damage and saving lives and property. Although they may seem like a relatively simple component, fire hoses have a complex structure, diverse applications, and strictly defined safety standards.

Key characteristics of fire hoses

High-pressure resistance – fire pumps operate at high pressures, so hoses must withstand them without deformation or cracking.

Wear resistance and flexibility – the hose must endure friction, bending, folding, and heavy loads in various conditions.

Weather resistance – UV protection, resistance to moisture, chemicals, and temperature fluctuations.

Lightweight construction – allows faster deployment and retrieval during operations.

Types of fire hoses

Depending on their construction and purpose, fire hoses can be:

1. Fire Delivery Hoses

These are the most commonly known hoses, used to deliver water from the pump to the nozzle.
• Usually lay-flat.
• Made of synthetic fibers with a rubber inner lining.

2. Maneuvering hoses
Used in indoor fires or rescue operations; thinner and lighter for easier handling in confined spaces.

3. Special hoses
• For foam agents
• For chemical environments
• For high temperatures
• Antistatic, etc.

Storz couplings – fast and reliable connections
Fire hoses traditionally use Storz couplings – an international standard for quick connection:
• Symmetrical design – allows fast coupling without a specific orientation
• Materials – aluminum, bronze, stainless steel
• Applications – connecting hose to hose, hose to pump, hydrant, tanker, distributor, etc.

Thanks to these couplings, the firefighting team can prepare the entire water line in seconds.

Storz nozzles – control over the water stream
Nozzles are the devices at the end of the hose that shape and regulate the water flow. They can be:
• Straight-stream – provide a compact jet with long reach
• Spray nozzles – create a protective “water mist”
• Combined nozzles – allow switching between different modes
• Foam nozzles

The Storz standard is also used for these, ensuring quick compatibility with fire hoses.

Where are fire hoses used outside the firefighting industry?

Although designed for fire protection, these hoses are widely used in various sectors thanks to their durability and flexibility:
• Construction – water removal from construction sites, pumping, drainage
• Mining industry – transport of water and slurry
• Industry – cooling systems, washing, high-pressure cleaning
• Agriculture – irrigation systems, pump supply, water distribution
• Floods and emergencies – water removal and mobile pump operations
• Diving and marine applications – water and air supply systems, specialized operations
• Building fire equipment – wall-mounted fire cabinets, hydrant installations

Fire hoses are high-tech products subjected to strict safety and durability requirements. They are indispensable not only in fire protection, but also in industry, construction, and agriculture. The combination of quality hoses, reliable Storz couplings, and suitable nozzles ensures rapid response, effective water flow control, and high safety during operation.
